Formerly called the Southern California Co-operative Wind Tunnel, this 190,000 sf building once housed the largest testing wind tunnel on the west coast. The 20’ wind tunnel was hosted by a consortium of aircraft companies including Douglas where they evaluated their aircraft throughout the mid and late twentieth century. As a result of its former use, the complex of concrete buildings had few windows and large, uneven, dark spaces. One of the most significant design challenges was to find (or create) openings for light to enter the deepest parts of the building.
Daly Genik’s design evolved to include large slices into the exterior of the building that allow natural light into the galleries and studio rooms. In addition, a new roof deck formed by a series of animated skylights brings in light from above. This series of interconnected light wells, clad in layered lightweight high-tech plastic, creates controllable apertures via a custom graphic pattern. The bold design and formation of large public spaces at the South Campus emphasizes the community-focused aspects of their many arts education programs.
Opened in spring 2004, the South Campus is the headquarters for Art Center’s growing public education programs, the graduate art program, an expanded exhibition program, the Archetype Press, the printmaking lab, and a rooftop cafe and garden. The South Campus will increase the capacity and accessibility of Art Center’s community-focused design and visual art programs while relieving severe space shortage on the existing hillside campus. Close to the Pasadena freeway and adjacent to the future Gold Line light rail, the South Campus is easily accessible from Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles.
