House of Copenhagen selected as the major furniture supplier to the Art Center College of Design's new South Campus in Pasadena California 425 pieces of modern Danish design furniture built- to-order in Denmark was delivered March 2, 2004, on time, to the new 190,000-square-foot South Campus building complex.           Unloading 160 tables specifically designed and manufactured for the Art Center by Bent Krogh Denmark           Art Center's stunning new South Campus officially opening March 18     The history of the South Campus begins in 1942, when five aircraft companies - including Douglas, Lockheed, and McDonnell - joined forces to create the Southern California Cooperative Wind Tunnel to test aircraft for aerodynamic data. The 190,000-square-foot facility was one of the first large supersonic wind tunnels in the world. The “Coop Wind Tunnel” contributed to the development of postwar commercial and military aircraft from 1945 to 1960. Over time the tunnel grew into a seven-building complex, and most recently served as an appliance manufacturing plant and showroom. Art Center College of Design acquired the building in 2001 as the first phase of its overall expansion plan. The Santa Monica-based firm Daly Genik Architects worked closely with Art Center to develop an innovative and environmentally sustainable renovation. The design retains many elements of the historic building while fulfilling a complex, multi-functional program. Special features include a rooftop garden of drought-resistant and native plants, and skylight structures of polycarbonate foil (Texlon) - one of its first uses in the United States - that adjust shading as the sun moves across the sky created by Bruce Mau Design. The South Campus will give Art Center a striking public presence at the gateway to Pasadena. It will become the new headquarters for Art Center's “Zero to Infinity” public education programs, including Art Center at Night, Saturday High, Art Center for Kids, Summer Institute for Teachers, and the Language Arts Program. A new Graduate Art Complex with individual student studios and galleries will generate round-the-clock activity. Art Center's specialty print programs - the Printmaking Lab and Archetype Press - will, for the first time, be in proximity to each other, generating new opportunities for partnership and cross-pollination.
