The issues that confront Steven Ehrlich Architects are those which test all architects of good faith and strong ambition: the anxiety of influence, the dilemma of synthesis, the search for identity and the emergence of voice. The number and quality of influences on Steven Ehrlich's formations have guided the firm's visions. Ehrlich developed the approach he calls "architectural anthropology" during six years practicing, studying, and teaching architecture in Africa, where he learned an appreciation for courtyards and the powerful, functional simplicity of vernacular buildings. His experiences shaped an architecture that is concerned with people; the particulars of indigenous climate, landscape and culture; the festivities of spontaneous social gatherings and the power of simple forms and spaces. At the same time the firm is also committed to modern forms which incorporate cutting-edge technical solutions, durability, financial responsibility and clear program development. The practice is headed by Design Principal Steven Ehrlich, FAIA, two Managing Principals: Thomas Zahlten, AIA, and Cecily Young, AIA, and three Associates.

While Steven Ehrlich Architects has received much critical recognition, the most satisfying measure of achievement is that its architecture has succeeded in connecting people with people: public buildings encourage a multi-cultural fusion of people & place while residential works create serene environments that replenish the soul.
