Lake/Flato believes that architecture should respond to its particular place and should be a natural partner with the environment. Their designs evolve from an appreciation for the pragmatic solutions of vernacular architecture, the honesty of modernism, and the rich and varied landscape of the west. Sustainability has always been a core issue in Lake/Flato’s approach to regional design, and is now an essential goal to achieve high performance buildings that conserve energy and natural resources while attaining a high level of occupant productivity through healthy environments.

Lake/Flato’s early work resides predominately in rural Texas, allowing the firm to explore forms and materials that were simple, practical, honest, and firmly rooted to their location. As the firm has grown to 44 members, the project type and scale has diversified and their commissions have expanded well beyond their Texas borders.

Lake/Flato’s projects range from modest houses to museums, interpretative centers, universities, corporate headquarters, and private schools. Their eclectic mix of projects, clients, and scales allow the firm to stay fresh and explore new ideas. The root to their success is their collaborative process both with clients as well as within their own office, garnering the best of their talents and creating a place and a process that invites ideas to flourish. The firm’s work has received more than 90 regional and national architecture awards including 25 Texas Society of Architect’s Awards as well as the American Institute of Architect’s Honor Award in 1992, 1997, and 1999.
